Project:The Learning of Public Officials and Other Subjects Providing the Environmental Education on Flood Protection and Prevention in Prague
State:Finished
Submitter:JPD3
Time of Relevance:2007–2008
Project Objective:

In 2002, the Czech capital Prague, as well as many other Czech and European towns, was affected by large floods that caused huge property damages. Therefore, the focus of political representatives and the public was redirected to proposing and building different types of flood protection measures in urban areas.

Project aims to develop education tools regarding the flood protection for key actors in Prague. Information and abilities which are currently missing are as follows:

  1. information on sustainable flood protection measures built in river channels as well as in their surroundings,
  2. information on successfully realized flood protection measures in urban areas in CR as well as in abroad,
  3. ability to carefully manage the development in floodplains regarding the feasible information on risks,
  4. ability to propose and realize sustainable flood protection measures,
  5. ability to view the floods as the natural phenomenon which cannot be fully prevented and to which the town needs to adapt.

The key project activity is to compile the learning publication on flood protection in urban areas to enlarge the informational base of target groups. There is a big focus on the transfer of know-how from Germany that has large experiences with sustainable flood protection measures. German experts will be invited to two discussion seminars held in Prague. Further, the group of 40 Czech experts will attend the 3-days excursion to Germany.
